About fifteen Catalan companies in the fruit sector are participating these days with Prodeca in the Fruit Logistica fair, one of the most important sector events in Europe, under the brand “Catalonia, where fruit is culture”.
Fruit Logistica, which takes place in Berlin from February 7 to 9, is a meeting point for the fruit and vegetable industry, and concentrates the entire supply chain in a single event. In this context, Catalan companies present themselves with the aim of showing the sector’s export potential.
The Fruit and Horticulture sector (Prodeca index) is the third agri-food exporting sector in terms of both value and volume during 2023 (January-November). The sector, as a whole, exported 877,963 tons and €1,095.03M in value in 2023 (from January to November), which represents an increase of 11.05% in volume and 16.66% in value compared to the same period of 2022.
In 2023, the sector recovered historical production and export data after a financial year (2022) marked by climatic conditions (frost in March).
Catalonia exports 75% of fruit (in relation to its production) to foreign markets and is present in the most demanding European and international chains in terms of quality, traceability and food safety.
Catalan exports of fruit in 2023 (January-November) were 756,006 tonnes and €1,003.83M, which represents an increase of 13.43% in volume and 17.07% in value, compared to the same period in 2022.
Catalan vegetable exports in 2023 (January-November) were 218,934 tonnes and €273.67M, which represents an increase of 3.52% in volume and 15.18% in value, compared to the same period in 2022 .
The most sold products abroad in terms of value are: peaches, nectarines, citrus fruits, apples and pears.
The European Union is the natural market for European fruit and where most of the world’s fruit and vegetable producers send their exports. Many producing countries try to produce more and more, far above their internal demand, to sell in Europe, where they enjoy non-reciprocal preferential treatment when they have to receive European fruits.
